Wisconsin whitewater, Montreal River

Iron Geobegic county, below Saxon Falls to Highway 122 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     3.1 miles
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Wisconsin are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. The below Saxon Falls to Highway 122 stretch of Montreal River in Iron/Geobegic County is 3.1 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Iron/Geobegic County scenery and the beautiful
way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The below Saxon Falls to Highway 122 section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. If you're coming from Merrill it's not a long
drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This section is quite short so no need to bring snacks. The wild scenery of the Gogebic Range is great. Getting a good
workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places.

Briefly about the general area:
Saxon Falls is always fun to check out; you'll probably meet some people from Hurley here. Now, you may think that's heaps but there's even more fun things to do here in the Gogebic Range. A short tour to Saxon Falls is always worthwhile; pretty scenery and magnificent skiing is what you acquire at Whitecap Mountain. This river is so perfect. Montreal River is in close proximity to Island Lake which is a delightful site.
