CLASS II-III(IV)     6.1 miles
  This section of Potato River is 6.1 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III(IV) section by American Whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from Merrill, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Wisconsin are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The nature scenery
    of Iron County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Gogebic Range scenery is wonderful. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system,
the Upson Falls to Foster Falls stretch is just one of many. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve  
in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip.

Briefly about the general area:
A visit to Island Lake when you're here at Potato River is a great idea; the snow is fine at Whitecap Mountain. You just can't imagine the amount of outdoors exciting stuff the Gogebic Range has to offer. Lots of people from Upson come to Potato River, and a journey to Copper Falls State Park when you're here is never a bad idea. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. Potato River gets a normal amount of rain. The month with most of the rain is August, and the driest month is February.
