Wisconsin whitewater, Potato River

Iron Ashland county, Highway 169 to Potato River Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-IV(V)     6.5 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Wisconsin you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. The beautiful scenery of Wisconsin and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. You might have to settle for
a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. A bit of exercise and
just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The put-in is not too far from Merrill, as you can see on the road map further down. The Highway 169 to Potato River Road stretch of Potato River in Iron/Ashland County is 6.5 miles long
and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-IV(V) section. When you're paddling down a Gogebic Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too.

Briefly about the general area:
Potato River is a location with many visitors from Saxon, and when you're here it's always fun to explore Copper Falls State Park. But wait, there's more amusing things to do in the Gogebic Range. Don't leave Potato River without first paying a visit to Potato River Falls. The skiing at Whitecap Mountain is nice. Throughout the warm days of summer highs here at Potato River reach the 70's.
