  The starting location is a short drive from Merrill, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This section of Turtle River in Iron County is 16.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I(III) section of whitewater. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. There's camping available near Turtle River. No matter if you're whitewater rafting
    or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The beautiful Gogebic Range scenery is an added bonus. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near.
You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. The scenic beauty of Wisconsin and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state  
you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy.

Briefly about the general area:
Lots of people from Mercer come to Turtle River; what would winter be without some skiing at Big Powderhorn Mountain. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Gogebic Range. Summer brings highs in the 70's to Turtle River. Summer night lows descend down to the 50's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 10's; night lows at Turtle River throughout the winter generally drop into the-10's. A typical amount of rainfall falls here at Turtle River.
