The Casa Piedra to FM 170 stretch of Alamito Creek is 23 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Texas scenery and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come     here to paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The Casa Piedra to FM 170 stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camping stuff. The starting point is not too far from Pecos, as you can see on the road map further down. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good places for that around here. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels   fill up quick. Briefly about the general area: Going for a hike on the Rancherias Canyon Trail is always a delightful adventure. Everybody loves Big Bend Ranch State Park, and close by you locate the Fort Leaton State Historic Site Nature Trail which is a delightful hiking trail. This is a great river. Around Alamito Creek you don’t get a lot of rainfall. Most of the rain falls throughout September; March is the month with the least moisture. Through the long summer days highs here at Alamito Creek get into the 100's with overnight lows in the 70's. The winter brings highs down to the 60's, and after the sun is down all through the winter temperatures at Alamito Creek plunge into the 30's.
