Alabama whitewater, Salt Creek

Talladega county, Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV(V)     3 miles

Paddling Salt Creek crosses private land and in Alabama if you can't navigate it in a craft of somekind you are tresspassing as soon as you step out of the craft. The last 2 miles before Henderson Lake road is all private land. It is so low and narrow with dead falls everywhere there is no way to navigate it in any kind of craft. Says John Ponder

The Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road section of Salt Creek in Talladega County
is 3 miles long and is a class III-IV(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're coming from Anniston-Oxford it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map
further down. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. The scenic beauty of Talladega County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road stretch is one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The average Alabama
whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This section is quite short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over.

Briefly about the general area:
While you're here at Salt Creek you can take a hike along the Odum Trail, and a perfect spot like Cheaha State Park is too good to leave out. While you're here at Salt Creek you will meet lots of folks from close by Munford, and Salt Creek Falls is a nice local attraction.
